The internet is full of websites, blogs, Facebook pages, and YouTube videos featuring shipping container homes. When it comes to building a modular shipping container home, there are many important factors that you need to consider. What you should know is much of the information you find online regarding shipping container home construction is not the best. Most of the people that offer this information, I believe, have good intentions. However, they do not seem to have a full understanding of shipping container construction.
In theory, a shipping container seems to be an affordable and reliable means to construct a home. The truth is, a steel box will heat up to over 150 degrees (F) in the Texas summer heat. If improperly insulated, this steel box with an AC unit will cause the container to accumulate moisture between the walls, causing mold to grow and spread throughout the walls. Sprayed closed-cell foam will help substantially. However, the exterior siding of the container will still be over 150 degrees (F) in the summer.
Many DIY individuals think they can build a shipping container house inexpensively. The truth is you could be looking at well over $200 per (SqFt) to properly construct a shipping container home. Over the next several months I will be designing and constructing a few new homes that I am called Boxdominiums.
